Starting school is one of the biggest milestones in a child's life. At Mater Dei Catholic Primary School, we know that a positive and confident beginning can have a lasting impact on a student's educational journey. That's why we are committed to building meaningful connections with children and families well before their first day of Prep.
More than just a school visit
Throughout the year, we open our doors to local families through a variety of programs designed to foster familiarity and belonging. One of our current initiatives, Storytime, introduces children to the joy of stories, songs and rhymes, while helping them build confidence and familiarity with the school environment. It also creates valuable opportunities for families to connect with staff and other families.
Learning, exploring and belonging
We also have many opportunities where our local Early Learning Centres and Kindies are invited to attend. Recently, our Science Week Kindy Community Day saw our visitors engage in hands-on learning experiences while meeting future classmates, teachers and families. Through exploration, play and discovery, young learners begin developing confidence in a familiar setting while gaining an early glimpse into the exciting learning opportunities available at Mater Dei.
Building foundational skills before Prep
Our Prep Readiness Sessions provide children with the opportunity to become familiar with school routines, learning spaces and their future teachers through a series of engaging experiences before they commence Prep. Through fun and interactive literacy and numeracy activities, children gain an authentic taste of classroom learning while building confidence, independence and a sense of belonging, ensuring they feel prepared and excited for their first day at Mater Dei.
A message on the transition to Prep from Principal Donna Jones
"At Mater Dei, we believe that a child's journey begins long before their first day of school. Building strong relationships with children and their families early allows us to create a genuine sense of belonging from the very beginning."
"When children feel connected, known and supported, they start school with confidence and enthusiasm. Our pre-Prep connections are designed to help families become part of our community and ensure every child feels comfortable, valued and ready to learn."
"We are proud of the welcoming environment we have created at Mater Dei, where every child is known and every potential is grown.”
Beginning the journey to Prep together
At Mater Dei, our approach to transition extends beyond preparing children for school. It is about creating relationships, fostering confidence and helping families feel connected to a community that will support them throughout their educational journey.
By engaging with children early through Storytime, community events and our Prep Readiness Program, we ensure that when the first day of school arrives, it feels less like a new beginning and more like coming home.
