Catholic Identity

Catholic Identity is central to the evangelising mission of all Catholic educational communities. It is reflected in our structures and processes, our curriculum and learning environments, the formation of staff as teachers and leaders, our strategic planning and community culture, student wellbeing, and our relationships with parents, parish and the wider community.

At Mater Dei Catholic Primary School, we value our Catholic identity and are committed to nurturing it through all aspects of school life. We strive to teach, support, lead, plan and engage our students, staff, parents, parish and wider community in all that we do.

Mater Dei draws its inspiration and direction from its foundations within the Catholic tradition of the Parish of St John's Wood and the early involvement of the Sisters of Charity. Since the school began in 1951, the Sisters of Charity played a significant role in nurturing the education of the community, witnessing to Gospel values through their commitment to service, compassion, and care for others. Central to this tradition is a deep respect for the dignity of each person and a call to live Christ's love in action, shaping a community where faith, learning and service are interwoven in the daily life of the school.

Religious Education comprises two distinct but complementary dimensions – teaching people religion and teaching people to be religious. Teaching people religion is an educational activity focused on the classroom learning and teaching of religion and utilises a range of learning processes and resources. Teaching people to be religious is identified with the religious life of the school and is a faith development activity focused on nurturing the religious, spiritual and faith growth of students. At Mater Dei some of the activities that make up the religious life of the school are: classes attending Masses, Parish/School Masses, classroom prayer, whole school prayer, and supporting Caritas Australia, Catholic Mission and St Vincent de Paul.

Mater Dei Catholic Primary School belongs to the Parish of St John’s Wood / The Gap. Information about the Parish Sacramental Program can be found on the parish website.
